Forecasts of bad weather didn’t stop anyone making it to sunny Milton Keynes for the latest home game and so it was another sell-out. Newbie Ian Fearn (MrF) joined us and, as is usually the case with new players at CheeseyPoker, impressed upon his debut. The first game of the day started pretty much on time at just after 13:00 and was once again a 2 table affair. Derek once more arrived a little late but was only blinded out for a small percentage of his chips before making his appearance. This is becoming a regular thing for Derek and I’m starting to suspect that he’s trying to emulate Phil Helmuth at the WSOP. Bazza was first to sit down and watch the football on tv when his pair of sixes bumped into Sheriff’s QQ in a race he wasn’t likely to win (more about Sheriff’s propensity to win showdowns to follow). Derek was next to go when drawing to just 3 cards with his A7 versus 77. Buzz on the button then dealt a flop of 234 for the wraparound straight to his A5 to remove Heidi and we were down to the final table. The first big hand of the final was a 3 way pot with 2 players all-in. Sheriff, who by this stage had amazed a huge stack of chips turned over 66, Nigel, who to this point had been quiet, turned over AK and Ali turned over 99. An ace on the turn meant that Nigel took the main pot and Ali took the side pot to leave Sheriff with only ½ of his original holding. This might have been the only pot in the whole game that Sheriff lost. Richard Prew (for anyone who has wondered, he assures me that his nickname TightEnd is a reference to his American Football playing days and NOT his prison nickname) then picked up AA against Buzz’s AQ which held up to decimate Buzz’s chipstack and leave him almost touching cloth. In fact Buzz was soon all in versus Sheriff and was very happy to see Sheriff turn over J7 versus his own J9. All was looking rosy for a nice double through until the river was revealed as a 7. The word fish was distinctly heard under the breath of a few of the players as Sheriff pulled the chips towards himself. Sheriff certainly had plenty of luck going his way so far, but it couldn’t continue. Could it ? Unfortunately Ali was next to find that the poker gods were indeed smiling upon Sheriff Fatman. She was all-in with AJd versus Sheriff’s QQ. When the flop came down with 2 diamonds and 2 more straight cards to leave her so many outs for the higher pair, the flush and the straight it looked like the Sheriff must finally be on the receiving end, but no help came and Sheriff picked up another pot. YT was out in 6th place with A2 v Sheriff’s K7 when both a K and a 7 hit. Nigel was next to suffer the cruel twist of fate at Sheriff’s hand when he got all his chips in with AQ to dominate Sheriff’s A5 only to see a 5 hit on the river. The mutterings of fish were now more openly expressed as no-one could ever remember seeing any one player make as many hands as Sheriff had in 1 game. Down to 4 players and only 3 places paying so everyone must have known that Dazza (Smoking Gun) would find a way to be next out. Having been fairly quiet for some time Dazza picked up TT on the button and decided to push all his chips in. Sheriff on the button was eager at this stage to get into any pot, however big or small, with any holding and turned over A7. Flop 456 Turn 7. River Ace and Smoking Gun was once again denied a cash-out. A cacophony of fish could now be heard (mainly emanating from Dazza). Ian Fearn finished a tremendous 3rd in his debut game at the home of Cheesey poker. Richard Prew came second when his A9 was unable to improve against Sheriff’s TT. So Sheriff picks up 1st place upon his return to Cheesey poker. Newbie MrF decided not to play the second game (deeming £50 too much to stake) and kindly offered to take notes on the the game for me. I thanked him profusely and it wasn’t till I came to write this report that I realised I would be going almost from memory alone as the notes look like hieroglyphs that I’m sure even Champillion would have trouble deciphering. Anyway here goes. Another 2 table game sees early action as Derek goes all in with AJ against Ali’s AK. A jack on the flop and no further help sees Derek double through and Ali take her double chance early on.. Soon after Richard Prew picks up bullets and Buzz’s ladies mean that an all-in is inevitable. No Q or A hit the board but 4 spades mean that Buzz makes a flush and takes the pot.. First player out is John. He plays all in with his pair of 6’s against Anthony’s AT. The flop sees a T hit and the river gives trips. Ali is next to go out with J5 v Buzz’s AQ. Not sure of the details here but I assume she was short stacked and forced to play. Richard was next out when trying to steal and running into Derek holding cowboys. He was quoted as saying “I was being creative”. Buzz was next to be “creative” when playing his whole stack after only seeing 1 of his hole cards (an ace) against Derek’s J3. Board came down TJ5T6 to give Derek 2 pair. Buzz turns over his 2nd card to reveal another ace and doubles through to much hilarity. Nigel makes a quiet exit with JJ v Sheriff’s AK which hit another 2 Aces. Heidi was next to be removed when her QQ failed to hold up to Barry’s A5. Barry then departed playing 55 against Anthony’s 88. Smoking Gun and Anthony finished 7th and 6th when Dereks AK hit another A to take the pot. Derek was next out but unfortunately I have no details as to how this happened. YT finished in the money after being all in against Buzz. Sheriff came 3rd after his 86offsuit was cracked. The heads up between Buzz and Anthony was quickly over. Anthony’s victory came with AQ v Buzz’s KJ. Onto game 3 and MrF decided to play this one. Ali was first out but unfortunately I have no details as to the hand that caused this or who was/were the opponent(s). Soon after this TightEnd went to the loo. When he got back he saw Buzz was playing his hand for him and was just calling Dazza’s all-in bet. He was horrified when he saw that his full house was beaten by Dazza’s quads……until everyone fell about laughing and he knew he had been set up. I’m sure he had a wry smile on his normally straight poker face when Buzz was next out after betting into Smoking Gun’s nut flush (so unlike him to play a drawing hand).Nigel went out when he found his AJ dominated by Heidi’s AK. John was unlucky to go out when his A6 got beaten by Smoking Gun’s QJ when the river delivered a straight (2 drawing hands in 1 game, this is unheard of). Derek was out next in a multi-way pot that he was never going to win. Mr F was out when he tried to bluff Sheriff off a pot with 92 and Sheriff turned over T9 to have him dominated. Heidi bubbled when she locked horns with Smoking Gun and her 77 wasn’t able to improve above 2 pair as Dazza’s 88 went on to make a full house. Sheriff moneyed once again as he went out in 3rd place when he got his chips in with A8 v Smoking Gun’s AT and wasn’t able to outdraw. Heads-up between Smoking Gun and Tight End was quite a long affair as they probed and parried looking for weakness. Eventually Smoking Gun’s KQ was able to overcome TightEnd’s QJ to triumph for 1st place. After the 3rd game some of us settled down to a cash game of Levy’s. What a great game this is. I know it got described in an earlier report so I won’t go into the mechanics of the game, but it really is good fun to play and I’m sure it will become a regular fixture in our cash games. The whole day was played in an excellent atmosphere (as always) and much joking and teasing was enjoyed by all. Nigel Phillips was called upon en masse to come up with a nickname. He is a study of concentration and focus at the table and so names such as “The Silent Assassin” and “Whispering Death” were suggested for him. Anyway we must have a nickname for him, so I’ll be posting a separate thread asking for suggestions. Sheriff placed in all 3 games and newbies and seasoned old pros alike shared the other positions.
